Cause and Effect Language
Cause and effect can be expressed through:
  • nouns – cause of/reason for/source of,
  • verbs – to cause/lead to/result in/affect,
  • prepositional phrases – because of/due to/on account of/as a result of/owing to/in view of,
  • linking words – because, thus, therefore, so, consequently, as a result, as a consequence.
The same message can be expressed differently, depending on what the focus is put on, either the cause or the effect.

To express cause, we use because, owing to the fact that, due to the fact that, for this reason, on the grounds that, since, as, In view of, Because of, Owing to, Seeing that…
To express effect, these linking words are useful: thus, therefore, so, consequently, as a result, as a consequence.
